Wellingborough students Erica Godfrey, 20, and Louise Annis, 19, who are both in the second year of a BTEC at Northampton College, showcased their work in a fashion show at the Guildhall in Northampton last week.
Ms Godfrey's project, Hyperbole, w
as a western take on Japanese origami, made from silk fabric.
She said: "I wanted to steer away from traditional styles. I didn't want people to see it was Japanese straight away so I was quite subtle with my designs.
"I wanted to westernise it and I am really pleased with the final collection. People commented on how well the fashions have been put together as silk is hard to work with."
Louise Annis created Equidae, a linen, chiffon and leatherette collection based on the British Empire in the 1800s.
She said: "I did lots of research into the British Empire and finally based the fashions on African, Indian and Arabian styles.
"I looked at different tribes and also incorporated zebras and wild animals into the main part of the collection.
"I used feathers to give it a luxurious, colonial feel which I think really works.
"It's been a challenge but it's definitely been worth it.
"I had a vision and I managed to create it."
Fashion lecturer Joy Townsend said: "I am always amazed by how much the students produce within such a short timescale.
"They have exceptional talent and creativity.
"It is the perfect finale to the course."
