A pub has published a mini-parenting guide in a bid to reach out to families.
The Priory in Wellingborough has also installed a soft play area for children to use in an attempt to become family-friendly.

It is hoped the guide, which will be distributed at the bar and through local schools, will give parents confidence in the pub trade and give them ideas for keeping children entertained.

Earlier this month the Evening Telegraph reported how pubs had to focus on families as a customer base to combat reduced takings from the smoking ban.

Priory manager June Ogden said: "Keeping the children happy during the summer holidays can be a real headache for even the most organised parents.

"Now with the credit crunch biting, more people than ever need to tighten their belts and keep a close eye on their expenses.

"There are so many ways to entertain the kids while keeping costs down and we hope the launch of our guide will help parents do exactly that."

The guide gives parents ideas on days out as well as how to spice up mundane activities such as reading and gardening at home.

The smoking ban is the reason for pub and club closures all over the Country as we know, but trying to turn them into youth clubs is not the answer, what they should be doing is to support the smoking customers and get rid of this ban, they should be the only ones to decide smoking or non smoking and they should stand up and be counted and tell this failed government, NO,this smoking ban is killing our business,is it any wonder the unemployment rate has gone up,Tug.

I wish them well in their endevour, but this solution to the damage being done by the smoking ban will not suit everyone.
Not everyone wants to go to a family friendly pub, in fact, only a minority either have children or have children in the age bracket that these facilities will cater to.
Of the latter category these people are not typically the big spenders in the pub and I hope the increase in the numbers of kids running about the place doesn't drive away some of their more regular customers.
