Historic buildings are to be pulled down to make way for a town centre development.
The Drill Hall is one of the buildings in Wellingborough earmarked for demolition.

The borough council says none of the buildings lost has any "inherent architectural value".

Part of the plan is to enlarge the existing conservation area to prot
ect places of local landscape merit.

Wellingborough councillors are being asked to approve the town centre area action plan at their development control meeting on Wednesday night.

The proposal is a mix between retail and office developments.

Albany House Medical Centre has expressed concerns about increased noise and pollution from the greater use of Queen Street.

Staff are also worried about the impact on parking and access for emergency vehicles because of the Northern Interceptor route.

The council says noise levels caused by Queen Street are not expected to be at a level preventing the opening of windows in the clinic.

Improved parking will be provided in a new multi-storey car park nearby, the report says.

Queen Street will have two lanes in one direction and there will be bus priority measures in Church Street.

Then the borough council are incompetent and blinkered and need replacing. In general the redevelopment scheme is a good one for the area, but pulling down the Drill Hall is architectural vandalism. It's not spectacular, but it would be a crying shame to see it replaced by a set of ordinary dull modern buildings (and let's face it, we're not getting anything that remarkable in the plans)

That's what Raunds Town Council said when I asked them why so many historic buildings had been pulled down over time. Now look at it.
Towns and villages that preserved and maintained their historic buildings are desirable places to be - look at Oundle or Olney for example.
Keep on demolishing...nothing is worth keeping according to this lot. We take an extraordinarily utilitarian view of the built environment - must be the underlying communist streak in planning departments or something.

It's no wonder Wellingborough has so much litter and graffiti, if the council dont even care about the place why should anyone else!

We've got litter because the bins are overflowing. We've got graffitti because the kids have very little to do.

The council doesn't really listen to the electorate, I have no idea what they're up to, or where all the spectacularly stupid ideas come from. I don't want to criticise the entire organisation though, because that's not fair - the front-line staff are excellent, it's just the high level people that seem to be wasting everyones time and money.

Now that the Wellingborough Tresham might not receive the funding to relocate into Jacksons Lane car park then surely The Drill Hall will not now need to be demolished as we were told that Treshams move is the kingpin of the redevelopments.(not forgetting the Fiddlers pub and the adjoining cottages facing demolition,The Northern Interceptor route won't be needed......)

Nic B - "The council doesn't really listen to the electorate, I have no idea what they're up to, or where all the spectacularly stupid ideas come from."

Here's a clue Nic, the ideas do not originate from the Councillors. However once the ideas have been formulated, every mechanism possible is used to herd the Councillors into agreeing with them - including the old chestnut "If we don't do it this way we risk losing the backing for all our other worthwhile plans".

That is the issue. NNDC and other agencies control the purse strings and therefore they determine what is "best for Wellingborough". The concept of simply giving the money to the Council for use on projects local people want is completely alien.
