A musician who has led Thrapston Town Band for 38 years had a royal appointment to receive his MBE.
Conductor Raymond Jeffery has been part of the band for 55 years and was nominated for the honour for services to the band and the community.

He has helped to raise hundreds of pounds for the Royal British Legion and works closely with Thrapston Primary School.

Mr Jeffery said his wife and son knew he was in line for an MBE for 12 months but he had no idea.

Mr Jeffery, 78, said: "You walk into Buckingham Palace and it's like going back to Queen Victoria's time.

"Everything is worked out with military precision.

"There are pictures in there which are almost as big as my flat.

"Her Majesty asked how long I had been with Thrapston Town Band and when I told her, she said I must have been very young when I started.
"I said, 'that's very kind but I am 78' and she laughed at that."
