Pupils at Wellingborough School made it to the national finals of a literature competition.
A team from the school triumphed at the regional finals of the annual Kids Lit Quiz at Roade School, near Northampton, to reach the national finals, which took place at Oxford Town Hall on Friday, November 27.

Pupils Curan Tahim, 12, Christian Whi
te, 12, 11-year-old Ellie Clarke and 12-year-old Daniel Whatton beat 25 other teams in 10 rounds of fierce questions, gaining a total score of 82 out of 100 to become Central England winners and go on to the country-wide final.

The group then set off for Oxford, where they took on 14 teams from across the United Kingdom.

Questions they were asked during the national final included "J.K Rowling shares the same birthday as Harry Potter – what is that date?" and "what was the name of the German boy in the novel The Boy in Striped Pyjamas?"

Claire Mitchell, from Wellingborough School, said: "They all love reading. Christian reads an average of five books a week and can't get enough of them.

"The others even had to stop him from reading the books they received as round prizes while the competition was in full flow.

"The school's English department has introduced a required reading list for those aged between seven and 13 in order to widen the number of genres each pupil encounters and it certainly seems to be working.

"We arrived at Oxford Town Hall and the team met some of the 30 authors who were there before being ushered into the main hall along with 14 teams from across the United Kingdom."

The guest at the final was comedian Harry Enfield, who did a reading from the first page of the new young James Bond book by Charlie Higson, which is not going to be available until 2011.

The team finished the day in eighth place.

Mrs Mitchell said: "During the afternoon the children got to meet more of the authors and everyone got something signed to take home as a memento. It was great fun and we look forward to next year with great confidence."
