West is so pleased as Diggin takes a chance

Fans' favourite Paul Diggin has been praised for taking his chance by Saints coach Dorian West.

After being one of the stars of last season, Diggin has endured a depressing campaign watching in-form Saints from the sidelines.

Injury and a loss of form have condemned the 25-year-old, whose

contract is up at the end of the season, to be a bit-part player.

But Ben Foden's call-up to the England squad has given Diggin his chance in the starting line-up and the former BBOB has taken it with two tries in two games.

Forwards coach West was pleased to see Diggin score after just two

minutes against Leicester on Saturday in Saints' 23-11 LV= Cup win and the former Tigers hooker believes the winger has given the coaches something to think about when the inter-nationals are back.

West said: "Digger (Diggin) has had a few injuries and a bit of poor form earlier in the season. But he has come back in the last few weeks and done well and taken his opportunities.

"That is all you can ask of your players. We are really pleased those players are coming in and asking the question in selection. That is good for us, having everybody competing for a place in the team."

After being a virtual ever-present last season Diggin's future at the club is still unclear with Saturday's game being just his seventh appearance of the campaign.

Chris Ashton's stunning form has left Diggin playing in the Wanderers for much of the season and it remains to be seen whether the Northampton-born winger will be at the Gardens next season.

Yet last year he was the club's leading try-scorer, finishing with 14 in all and nine in 15 games in the Guinness Premiership.

Diggin will have another chance this weekend to stake his claim in the Guinness Premiership clash against Newcastle at Franklin's Gardens.

Meanwhile, Northampton have arranged a friendly between Wanderers and

Siberia to be played on April 12.

Last season the Wanderers beat Russian champions VVVA Podomoskovie 61-17 in a friendly and Siberia is considered to be the traditional rugby stronghold of Russia.

The Wanderers take on the British Army on pitch two at the back of

Franklin's Gardens tomorrow, kick-off is at 2pm.
