Wellingborough closer to securing their place

Wellingborough bounced back from their disappointing loss last week to record their second win in three games in Midlands One East.

A strong start saw Boro take early control with a penalty from Pete Vickers.

Minutes later the forwards gave their backs the platform they needed and the ball was fed through the hands to Steven Gall who made a nice break before off-loading to Jason Minney to score the opening try.

Vickers added the extras.

However from their first real foray into the Boro half, Dunstablians got their first try as Minney was beaten by his opposite number in the push for the line.

The score went unconverted, though, and Boro had the final word of the half when Vickers kicked another fine penalty to make it 13-5 at the break.

The second half began as the first had with Boro quickly getting on top and taking full control.

The pack were particulalrly dominant at set-pieces which left little ball for the visiting backs to try to penetrate the home defence with, Ben Heffernan leading by example with hit after hit.

To their credit, Dunstablians kept trying and kept Boro in their own 22 for a time.

But the home defence held firm each time and eventually a Dunstablians turnover brought about the opening Boro needed to kill the game off.

From a lineout, the ball was spun out wide and Gall spotted a big gap in the visiting backline which he was able to chip into.

The centre gathered his own kick to score under the posts. Vickers added the conversion and there was no way back for Dunstablians.

"I was pleased with performance, we definitely made amends for last week," said Vickers.

"The forwards and backs worked well together and we played a really structured game.

"The set-pieces were excellent and our defence was fantastic. The two points gives us a bit more of a cushion between ourselves and the

sides at the bottom and we feel confident of staying in this league."

Man of the match: Ben Heffernan.
