Things not shaping up at Triangle for Corby
This was a familiar tale of Rockingham Triangle woe for Corby Town.
On 15 occasions they have welcomed sides to their home ground this season.
On only four of those have the visitors left with nothing.
It is a statistic that puts an awful lot of strain on themselves when they hit the road.
The extra frustration was on this occasion they matched big-spending Fleetwood Town for the majority of the match.
The two midfields gave each other little chance to produce any quality football but the bulk of the chances fell to Corby.
Fleetwood had only two shots on target in the entire game.
The sad news for the Steelmen was both went in.
Two chances, two goals, three points.
That it was enough was also due to Craig Dootson at the other end.
He produced one fine save from Corby debutant Liam Dolman's long-range snapshot and was called upon on several other occasions.
The best of the lot came when Leon Mettam turned quickly and fired off a shot, only for the visiting keeper to stretch out his right hand and turn it behind.
It was an outstanding reflex stop which left the striker struggling to believe he had not scored.
This is not to say Corby were producing vintage stuff.
The balls into the frontmen were often more in hope than expectation
with the hardworking Jason Lee given little to use.
Not that it was easy to see in the heavy fog.
And the goals Corby conceded were frustrating for different reasons.
The opener, midway through the first half, came when a poorly-cleared throw-in was returned to the area by Gavin Cowan where an unmarked Adam Warlow – the division's leading goalscorer – had a free header which he placed in the corner of the net.
The second was from a swift counter-attack as Corby pushed for an equaliser and enabled Anthony Barry to run through on Mark Osborn's goal and slot home.
The Steelmen staff might say this Fleetwood side is considerably better funded than themselves and well placed to take their place in the Blue Square Premier.
But their side have beaten Kettering Town and scared the life out of York City in the last week.
And these were both away.
More of that fight, desire and quality is needed to make the Triangle home, sweet home again.
The result against Fleetwood means 22 out of 39 league points have now been dropped at base.
That is not good enough for a side that harbours play-off ambitions.
