Thelwell all set to complete his move
Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Alton Thelwell is set to complete his move to Kettering Town today.
Reports over the weekend suggested the central defender was ready to join the Poppies, having been at Newport County on non-contract terms since October.
And Kettering boss Lee Harper confirmed that Thelwell was on his way to Rockingham Road.
"We are hoping to complete the deal today," Harper said.
"We brought in Sol Davis and by bringing Alton in it means we have five defenders at the club and that means there is competition for places.
"We have cover in most areas now and that is pleasing.
"Alton has played at a high level in the past and I know Newport are disappointed that he is leaving them.
"I am sure he will be an excellent acquisition for us."
Harper, meanwhile, was delighted with the news that the Poppies will be live on TV again when they travel to Elland Road for their FA Cup second-round replay with Leeds United a week today.
The first clash at Rockingham Road was also screened live and the replay will be on ITV4 with an 8pm kick-off.
Harper, who has been revelling in the publicity since the Poppies were handed a potential tie at Manchester United in the third round, said: "It's fantastic news for the club and it is more money in the pot so we have to be pleased.
"The media coverage we have had since the weekend has been brilliant and I think we should all be milking it.
"But I will be making the point to the players that I won't be afraid to drop any of them for the game at Elland Road.
"We have games at Luton (tomorrow night) and against Salisbury and I need to get off the mark in the league.
"The lads must stay focused on the job at hand and we know it won't be an easy game at Luton."
