The leaders slip to a first league loss

The Premier Division title race warmed up when leaders Arthingworth lost for the first time.

They fell to third-placed Westfield A who opened the scoring when Sam

Wildman set Michael Edwards on course for his first blank night of the campaign.

Kevin Bird then exceeded expectations with another five-ender against Chris Gibbons while the leaders went further into arrears when Jack Coleman dispatched Paul Gatiss with ease.

Things could have got worse for the village side but Wildman failed to

convert a fifth-end match point against Gibbons who fought back to win 13-11.

Edwards thought the tide had turned when he won an 11-1 first game against Coleman but he had flattered to deceive and lost the next three.

Gatiss beat Bird and Wildman but when Coleman edged out Gibbons 11-9 in a decider the end was in sight. It was Coleman's 10th hat-trick while further wins from Wildman and Bird and a Coleman/Bird doubles completed

a 7-3 victory in which five sets went the full distance.

The result left Westfield four points behind the leaders but sandwiched in between came Town A who did their retaining cause no harm when Carl

Leeson, Mike Hawes and John Fuller went through the card with only

Westfield's Jimmy Wright's 16-14 fourth- end defeat at the hands of Hawes causing any concern.

There were no points for Higham Band lurking dangerously 10 points behind Arthingworth with two games in hand.

However, the loss is temporary for Athletic were unable to field a side.

Chris Ross returned for Baptist A in fine form but dropped an opening end to an adaptable Ian Sclater.

It was Mark Stockley who did most to keep alive SAS's hopes of avoiding

relegation with 12-10 finishes against Jacek Koltuniuk and Alex Aston.

Rovers escaped defeat for the first time when Arrows were held to a draw in a match of two highlights. Mark Pearson moved up two divisions to beat David Small in straight games while Martin Watts moving up one was the only player to notch a hat-trick, including a straight- game win against Nathan Thompson.
