Strachan ready to play his part

Gavin Strachan is relishing the chance to help Corby Town push for success after enduring an injury-hit season so far.

His dramatic equaliser for the Steelmen at Northwich Victoria on Tuesday night earned them a vital point against one of their big Blue Square North play-off rivals.

It also got the former Scotland Under-21 international off the hook after he looked to have missed the golden chance just moments earlier.

But Strachan felt that was simply down to lack of match-practice.

"The pressure was on me because I should have scored a couple of minutes earlier," he said.

"And I should have scored at Ilkeston the week before as well so that goal took a bit of pressure off me.

"It's been a frustrating time with injuries and we've had a lot of training sessions cancelled as well so it's been a struggle to get match fitness.

"I wasn't match-sharp against Ilkeston but I felt a bit better at Northwich.

"Hopefully I can keep that going and force my way back into the team."

That return might well come at Workington this weekend as the Steelmen are light in central midfield.

With Steve Towers banned and Leon Hibbert still injured, Strachan and Brett Solkhon are the only two recognised central midfielders left.

And that makes Strachan's return to playing, as well as goal-scoring form, a timely one.

"I'm not taking anything for granted but hopefully I'll be in the starting line-up for Workington and I can help the boys get a good result," Strachan continued.

"Northwich was a hard place to go to and we were very happy with a point on Tuesday night.

"But that will count for nothing if we don't go and get something at Workington."
