Steelmen: Walker is enjoying new role

Glenn Walker is enjoying having a more senior role in the new-look Corby Town side.

The winger has been one of the form players for the Steelmen in the first month of the Blue Square Bet north campaign.

Already, he has two goals and has seen plenty of the ball from his wide-left berth.

And he is happy to keep taking more responsibility within the gameplan.

"Personally, two goals in five games isn't bad and I'm happy with how it's going," he said.

"Our plan is to get the ball a lot wider rather than just hoofing it long as we sometimes tended to do last year.

"This year, with Andy Hall coming to the club, we want to make use of the fact we've got two wingers in me and him and we want to stretch the play more and spread it out.

"It means the gaffer has given me a lot more responsibility within the team for setting up attacks and getting the ball and I'm really enjoying it.

"He wants me to make things happen on the pitch when we're going forward and that's what my game's all about so I'm very happy with how it's going.

"It helps that I've been able to get a couple of goals too and my confidence is really high at the minute."

Walker's form, five goals from new striker Ben Mackey and a solid start from the defence means the Steelmen are again among the early front-runners.

The Bank Holiday derby win over Hinckley United lifted them back up to fifth in the table ahead of their clash with fellow high-fliers Boston United this weekend.

And Walker is satisfied with the Steelmen's opening month.

"We've had fours wins and considering we've got a new team and a new group of players, that's a pretty good start," he said.

"We've got 13 points and we're all pleased with how it's going.

"But we're not getting carried away. We're just going to keep working on what we have been doing well and take each game as it comes."
