Steelmen beaten at home

Corby Town suffered more home misery as league leaders Fleetwood Town inflicted another defeat in Blue Square North.

It means the Steelmen have won just three times at Rockingham Road in the league this season.

However, they may feel a little unfortunate after this one as the visitors had just two shots on goal and scored with them both.

A dour first half meant there was little quality to seek out in the heavy fog.

The first test for either keeper came on 21 minutes when debutant Liam Dolman's snap shot from 25 yards was pushed away by the excellent Craig Dootson.

The resultant corner saw Corby have three shots blocked in a goalmouth scramble.

However, moments later, a poorly-cleared throw-in was returned to the Steelmen area by Gavin Cowan where an unmarked Adam Warlow – the division's leading goalscorer - had a free header which he placed in the corner of the net.

Dootson denied Corby again in the dying moments of the half. Leon Mettam turned quickly and fired off a shot only for the visiting keeper to stretch out his right hand and turn it behind.

It was an outstanding reflex stop which left the striker struggling to believe he had not scored.

The second half did little to lift the spirits.

Not much play was visible as the gloom descended but it was the hosts who created more.

But luck was not on their side.

As they pushed for an equaliser the game was made safe with seven minutes remaining as a swift counter-attack enabled Anthony Barry to run through on Mark Osborn's goal and slot home.

Dave Deeney had a chance soon after to pull one back but the solid Dootson was again on hand to block.

Fleetwood defender Steve McNulty also turned a cross against his own post in stoppage-time but the Steelmen were by now resigned to defeat.

From box to box there was little to choose between the big-spending leaders and their hosts.

But it was moments of quality in either area that ensured Fleetwood took the points and Corby were left without reward again at home.
