Solkhon set for Poppies start

Brett Solkhon could be in line for a return to the Kettering Town starting line-up when they face AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

Poppies boss Lee Harper confirmed the popular midfielder is one of the changes he could make as he looks to freshen up his squad after a disappointing start to the new Blue Square Bet Premier season.

Kettering sit just above the relegation zone after the first month which ended in a 1-0 home defeat to local rivals Rushden & Diamonds.

They had chances to salvage a draw in that game but only looked a serious threat after substitutes Marcus Kelly, Solkhon and Iyseden Christie were introduced.

Solkhon, in particular, has caught the eye as a replacement in the last three matches.

And Harper hinted that changes could well be in the offing for the visit of the second-placed Dons at the weekend.

"Brett was very close to starting on Monday," Harper said. "His attitude has been first class and he now looks like the Brett who was here before. That is because he has adjusted back to full-time training.

"He came on against Rushden, had a free header and should have scored but it shows he still gets into the right areas.

"He's got a great chance of being involved in the next game and I can tell you he wasn't far away from starting on Monday.

"We have a good, strong squad and that shows when you can bring a Marcus Kelly or an Iyseden Christie off the bench and someone like Ian Roper can't even get on the bench.

"We have that competition for places and the players know if they don't do it, they don't play. So there may have to be some changes."

Harper, meanwhile, insists he will take full responsibility for the poor start to the new campaign. But he firmly believes the Poppies can still be a success this season.

"I am responsible for results and I am well aware of that," he added.

"No-one is more frustrated than me and I still feel we have a team that is capable of doing well.

"We have played some very good sides in the early stages and haven't looked out of place. I still believe we have a side that can finish in the upper reaches."
