Smith to be supersub for Diamonds
Sam Smith is set to continue his role as Rushden & Diamonds' super-sub this season.
But boss Justin Edinburgh insists the former youth-team striker can make another big impact in the Blue Square Premier after eight league goals last term – including two late efforts against Kettering Town.
The summer arrivals of Aaron O'Connor, Craig Farrell and Cliff Akurang appear to have left Smith out of the frame for a starting place in Saturday's opening match with Salisbury City at Nene Park.
Edinburgh said: "We have to remember that he has only just turned 19.
"Although he did very well last year from the bench, that was his first full season and he never affected games as well when he started. As a substitute he came on to make an impact.
"He's a kid who is still learning the game. But there's no doubt he has a very bright future ahead of him.
"It might take a little bit more time for him to fulfil his potential because he might not start as many games as he would like.
"O'Connor has been outstanding in pre-season when I looked to give an opportunity to everyone. Some took that better than
others."
Another player looking to
hold down a regular role in
Edinburgh's side is defender Michael Corcoran who provides cover across the back four.
The Diamonds boss added: "It speaks for itself that he made more than 40 appearances last season.
"He can play in numerous
positions which means he may never get a run at right-back or centre-half.
"His versatility is good news for the squad. Unfortunately he might not be able to hold down one position in the team.
"I think he's an unsung hero who has a massive part to play here. He has been excellent in my time at the club."
