Second-row Day hails quality of his fellow pack men

Christian Day says Northampton Saints have one of the most mobile packs in the Aviva Premiership.

Saints launched their assault with a superb 27-19 win over champions Leicester.

The three tries came from the front-row of Soane Tonga'uiha and Brian Mujati.

But they are just two of a front-eight jam-packed with powerhouse runners.

Tose that follow in the likes of Tonga'uiha's wake are just as quick to tear through the ruck for the quick ball Saints thrive on.

Day, who on Sunday was playing his first competitive game for Saints since suffering a career-threatening neck injury in January, said: "We have probably got one of the most mobile packs in the Premiership.

"That is something that Nobby (forwards coach Dorian West) and Jim (Mallinder) want.

"They want players who can perform anywhere on the pitch, not just in the scrum and the lineout.

"We have got eight starting players who can do that, but also players on the bench as well.

"Calum Clark came on straight into the second row, he is a back-row but he can perform anywhere.

"While Mark Easter came on and nicked a lineout. It is a real team effort and we have got athletes throughout the team."

Tonga'uiha's double on Sunday means he is already halfway to last season's total.

The Tongan has now touched down 14 times for Saints in 119 appearances.

Surprisingly Mujati was just one behind Tonga'uiha last season with three tries and his four five-pointers have come in 26 Saints

appearances.

But as well as being outstanding in the loose the Saints pack made sure they were on top in their primary roles, with the scrum putting Leicester – the best scrummaging unit in the Premiership – under big pressure.

Day added: "The scrum was the important thing on Sunday.

"Fair play to the front-row, they really knuckled down against probably the best scrummaging team in the country.

"To give away one penalty in the entire game and to dominate in the first half was crucial, that won us the game."
