Dominant Owls ensure derby all goes to form
Oundle v Corby rugby action: Number 12, gets Oundle's first try. 28/01/12
The formbook was religiously adhered to in this Midlands Four East (South) derby as Oundle recorded an impressive win.
The Owls racked up 36 points in the first half and another 35 after the break with a clinical display.
Nick Cobley led the way with four tries, captain Joe Rice and Simon Hudson both scored twice and the 11-try rout was completed by Matt Faulkner, Nick Curran and Lee Green who also landed eight conversions.
Corby’s points came from an Andrew Findlay try, converted by Steve Campbell just before the break.
However, their cause was not helped by having a man sin-binned at the start of the second half.
“I was very pleased with the performance, everything I asked for I got,” said Rice.
“The main thing I wanted to see was us maintain our momentum we have shown in the last few weeks and we certainly did that.
“Every time we had the ball in hand, we looked like we could score, while their try was the only lapse we had in defence the whole game and the only time we really let them look like they could score.
“Although the scoreline doesn’t reflect it, they actually defended very well at times and they competed really well for the full 80 minutes.
“Every scrum, every ruck and every maul, they were in there and battling so we had to work for it.
“But we did that really well, the defence was solid and the attack really functioned well so all in all, I was very happy.”
Despite the defeat, Corby manager Ricky Egan was proud of his side’s spirit in the face of an onslaught.
“The scoreline was no surprise and Oundle were worthy winners,” he said.
“However, I thought my lads battled all the way to the end and that has to be commended.
“Last year, when we were in the Merit Table, individuals in the team could win us games.
“This year that isn’t enough. We need to function and play as a team and that, if nothing else, is the big lesson we are learning.”
