Rainbow treble ensures Blues open up with win

Kettering eventually won this Midlands One East game, relatively comfortably.

However, having finished the first half completely dominating their

Bedfordshire opponents, they lost their way for much of the second

period.

And they nearly threw away the points at one stage, when Leighton Buzzard squandered a great opportunity to grab the spoils.

A dramatic start saw Leighton win a line-out within five metres of the Blues line straight from the kick-off before the home side countered and almost snatched the opening try.

Instead, Buzzard took the lead through a penalty before Tom

Bridgeman missed a relatively simple opportunity to level the scores.

Blues then took control of the game and after series of drives inside the 22 Corey Rainbow scored near the posts.

Bridgeman made no mistake with the conversion.

At this stage, Blues were dominant and it was only a mixture of poor

finishing and some stout defence that prevented them from pulling well clear.

Before half-time, however, Rainbow had scored his second try and with Bridgeman's conversion, Blues looked like running out comfortable

winners.

The visitors had other ideas and they fought back in the second half.

Leighton reduced their arrears with a penalty but that was soon

cancelled out by one from Rainbow.

But then, a mix-up in the Blues scrum led to an interception try for Leighton that cut Blues' lead to just four points.

Then, with tension mounting in the home ranks, the visitors squandered a golden opportunity to take the lead when they failed to take advantage of a three-man overlap.

Blues made them pay for that as a scintillating break from Rainbow, saw him beat three would-be tacklers to complete his hat-trick and seal the win.

The seconds beat Leighton Buzzard 2nd 26-25 while the thirds won 27-22 at Olney 2nd.

The fourths lost 19-8 at Market Harborough Vets while the fifths lost 58-0 at BBOB 2nd.

The Colts were also at Olney and won 17-0.
