Promotion double for Wellingborough sides

Wellingborough celebrated a magnificent double after both their men's and women's first teams secured promotion on the same day.

The men wrapped up the BodyKraft Midlands Regional Association East Midlands Division Two title with a pulsating 7-5 derby win over neighbours Kettering.

Meanwhile the women drew 3-3 in their promotion showdown at Hinckley to guarantee themselves a top-three finish in Midlands Region Women's League Division Two.

George Horton netted a hat-trick for Boro's men in a match that

bordered on the surreal at times as both sides abandoned any notion of defensive play and hit each other with waves of attacks to produce a

glut of goals.

Kettering established an early 2-0 lead but Boro fought back and two goals either side of half-time, from Horton and then Matt Marriott,

levelled things up.

Dave Wennington and Horton opened up a two-goal cushion for Boro in the second half and that was enough to keep them ahead as both sides took it in turn to score again thereafter.

Boro's other goals came from Luke Linfield, Joe Skinner and finally Horton again to complete his treble, while Kettering's scorers were Adam Butler (2), Paul McDowell, Alex van Vliet and Mark Spicker.

Boro's ladies went to Hinckley knowing a win would assure them of promotion.

But their hopes appeared doomed as the home side quickly established a two-goal lead.

However, two goals from Karen Woolley had them back on level terms and when Leanne Syme fired home from a short corner, Boro were all but there.

Hinckley had other ideas and fought back to equalise to leave Boro thinking they would have to win their final match this weekend.

But Leek's defeat at Bournville means Boro cannot be caught for a top-three finish and they too will be in Division One next year.

In the MRHWL Premier Division, Kettering's title bid was finally ended

after a 0-0 home draw with county rivals Towcester left them four points behind champions Worcester with only one game left.

Annie Goodchild and Maria Higgins both scored twice as Kettering 2nd thrashed Luton 6-1 in Feeder South. Helen Keyworth and Julia Telford

completed the rout.
