Poppies boss has attacking intent

Mark Cooper is ready to use a large wedge of his playing budget on at least one striker for the new Blue Square Premier campaign.

Kettering Town's action in the transfer market has been limited so far this summer with midfielder Lee Fowler and defender Greg Taylor joining the ranks while youngsters James McPike and Ryan Beswick are both set to join on July 1.

But manager Cooper's focus seems firmly on the final third and he confirmed the Poppies have deals on the table for two new strikers.

However, he may have to leave a bit of money aside for a new goalkeeper as he confirmed Lee Harper is still mulling over a new deal.

Cooper said: "We have made offers for a couple of strikers who we think could do a really good job for us.

"Whatever major money we do spend in terms of offering deals will probably go in that department.

"Clubs in our league like Luton, Oxford, Stevenage and York have already spent a lot of money and we really can't get anywhere near that.

"Everyone is cutting their cloth and we are no different. We have to be prudent simply because of the times we are living in."

Cooper, meanwhile, believes the Poppies have already made good acquisitions in the form of Fowler, who signed from Forest Green Rovers, and Taylor, who was released by Northampton Town at the end of last season.

"If you speak to anyone they will tell you that Lee is as good a midfielder that you can get at this level," the Kettering boss added.

"If we are going to play a bit more football then he is the sort of man you want in your team.

"It doesn't mean we will be playing five-a-side across our own penalty area but if we get the right frontmen in then Lee will get us playing.

"Greg is a young lad who can play just about anywhere including at left-back where we have a vacancy. He will get the chance to make that his own."
