Oxford trip has no reason to scare us

Lee Harper insists there is no reason for Kettering Town to fear a trip to Oxford United at the weekend.

The Poppies players will still be licking their wounds having suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Cambridge United on Tuesday night after missing a host of chances before Danny Crow struck the winner.

But they will need to pick themselves up for the game at the Kassam Stadium when they face a title-chasing Oxford side who suffered a shock 2-1 home defeat to Hayes & Yeading on Tuesday.

The Poppies will be looking to stay in the hunt for a top-five finish in the Blue Square Premier.

And boss Harper says there is no way they will be sitting back against the high-fliers.

"We will stick together and there will be a lot more twists and turns to come before the season is over," he said.

"The players will be upset at what happened the other night but they will get over it and move on.

"There is a long way to go and the boys have to keep believing in themselves because if we perform like we did on Tuesday then there will be few worries.

"I watched Cambridge play Oxford the other week and I thought Cambridge were the better team.

"Then we got to Tuesday and there was only one team in it when we played Cambridge.

"So there is no reason for us to go to Oxford and fear anything.

"We will go there and play our game. We will go at them and hopefully impose our game on them.

"We won't sit back and if you get an early goal at a place like that then the pressure on them just increases."

The Poppies will, unlike against Cambridge, need to take their chances and Harper insists shooting practice will be on the agenda ahead of Saturday.

"The last few games have seen us put in acceptable performances but we need to put the ball in the net," he added.

"We will keep working on it in training and we will be trying to sharpen it up.

"We will get the lads to try to pass the ball in because you don't always have to blast it to score a goal."
