Outstanding Alex is Westfield’s star

Eleven-year-old Alex Ramsden proved that you can win things with kids with an outstanding performance against the current champions Burton Baptist A.

Playing for Westfield A, Ramsden recorded a fabulous hat-trick with wins over Terry Cardwell, Alex Aston and Chris Ross in the Premier Division.

Kevin Bird supported his young team-mate with a double to leave Burton in danger of slipping to a first defeat of the season.

But Aston’s team displayed the characteristics of champions and fought back from 5-3 down to gain a draw in a match that they were never ahead in.

Kettering Town A remain in third place as they were forced to settle for a draw with Burton Baptist B in a very tight match in which no-one remained unbeaten.

Mike Hawes got the ball rolling for Kettering with an excellent victory fifth-end win over Steve Silk as his team Kettering opened up a 3-0 lead.

Silk then returned to the table to beat John Fuller 5-11, 11-9, 8-11, 12-10, 11-9.

Two fifth-end wins for Jacek Koltuniuk against Hawes and Brian Harradine and a doubles success for Burton ensured the match finished all-square.

Higham Band took advantage of both of their title rivals drawing by beating Arthingworth 8-2.

Richard Elliott and Mark Nannery were unbeaten, although Nannery needed to go the full distance against Gerald Henson and Chris Gibbons to complete his treble.

Corby A could only field two players against their B team but still managed a 6-4 win with Lee O’Boyle unbeaten and Aiden Smith winning twice.

Henry Arthur beat Smith in straight games to record his side’s solitary win on the night before going down 12-10 in the decider to O’Boyle.

Smith and O’Boyle teamed up to record a first doubles win of the season for the A side.
