Firming up his plans

William Buller is hoping to have his plans for 2012 finalised by the end of this week.

The 18-year-old Islip-based racer is viewed as one of the brightest prospects in British motorsport and knows his decisions in the coming years will be crucial to his long-term ambition of making it to Formula One.

“It’s not like deciding what shirt to put on in the morning,” he said.

“This is a vital time for me and I need to make sure I make the right choice to maximise my potential and my chances for the season ahead.”

Last year Buller raced in the Cooper Tires British F3 series with Daventry-based Fortec Motorsport and finished as the leading British driver in fourth place overall in the championship.

He then went on to secure an impressive top-six finish for Fortec in the season-ending Macau Grand Prix.

Fortec have already announced three drivers for 2012 – the trio of British Formula Renault UK champion Alex Lynn, Brazilian Pipo Derani and Puerto Rican Felix Serrales.

But the fourth race seat at the county team is still vacant with Fortec no doubt hoping Buller will again be the man to fill it.

But the Northern Irishman is keeping all options on the table at this stage.

While F3 appears the most likely destination, there is also the possibility of GP3, the new series launched in 2010 as a feeder series to GP2.

Along with F3, it is the other big feeder series into F1 with many of the F1 teams running GP2 cars for their intended drivers of the future.

Lewis Hamilton was a graduate of GP2 and Buller knows there is more than one potential road to F1 open to him for the future, which makes his immediate decisions over this year all the more important.

If he stays in F3, Fortec will hope it is with them but Buller says his decisions will be based on what he feels is best for him.

“We’ve got contracts in front of us for various options, it’s just a case of deciding now which is the right one for me and I hope I will know that this week,” he said.
