Dominant Phoenix cruise to a big win

Wellingborough Phoenix maintained their push for the play-offs in EBL Women’s Division Two (Midlands South-East) with a comfortable 73-42 win at Ipswich Bobcats.

Georgia Elliot-King led the way for Phoenix with 16 points as they took control from the start and simply outplayed their hosts.

Phoenix were out of the blocks fast and led 23-13 at the end of the first quarter.

The dominance continued in the second period, which they won 21-8, to lead 44-21 at half-time.

Knowing they needed a major turnaround in form to get back into it, the Bobcats put up a more solid showing in the third quarter, but still only reduced the gap between the two sides by two points at 53-33.

And Phoenix were in no mood to let things slip any further and reasserted themselves in the final period, winning it 19-9 to record a comfortable success.

Elliot-King was supported by Naomi Sterling with 14 points, while Laura Shanahan had 10.

The result leaves Wellingborough fourth in the table, two points behind both Newham Stars and London Westside, while unbeaten leaders Loughborough Students Riders remain two points clear of the rest.

And the Riders are Wellingborough’s next opponents at Weaver’s Leisure Centre next Sunday (2.30pm tip-off).

Phoenix’s men had a week off in Division Three (South) but will resume their title challenge with two games this weekend.

On Saturday, they head to the capital to take on London Greenhouse Pioneers before returning home to face Oxford Brookes University 24 hours later (both games 5pm tip-off).
