Carr is runner-up in Irchester opener

Kettering’s Damian Carr turned in a creditable performance to clinch the runner-up spot in the opening round of the Wellingborough multi-terrain series held at Irchester Country Park.

The Coventry Godiva Harrier competed in the 15km event and came home in a time of 50.44 to finish behind Cambridge Triathlon Club’s Maz Firouzi who recorded a winning time of 50.03.

Wellingborough & District AC’s Phil Saxby clocked 1.08.03 to finish 31st while competing for them in the ladies section was Sarah Ellwood who came 13th in 1.16.13.

Running for Corby AC was Heather Kendall who clocked 1.31.39 for 26th.

In the 10km race, Gillian Brightwell was the top female finisher for Wellingborough & District when she came 17th in 53.14 and was followed by Michelle Barnett (24th in 56.59) and Sally Hewitt (28th in 58.01). On the men’s side, Andrew Laurance came 90th in 53.15 while John Hullett was 94th in 54.57.

Clinching a narrow victory for Wellingborough in the ladies section of the 5km event was Sally Richards who just edged out Corby’s Debbie Galletta by three seconds to win in 22.47. Also running for Boro were Maria Hollis (24th in 29.00) and Jodie Tilbury-Fowler (54th in 37.38).
