Brave fightback is not enough to win

Wellingborough produced a battling fightback in the frozen conditions before eventually losing 3-2 at Overstone Park in the first round of the Mail on Sunday Team Classic.

Despite being a member at the home club as well as holding the course record, Wellingborough’s Kyson Lloyd was unable to get the visitors off to a good start as he suffered a heavy opening loss to Dan Nixson.

County champion Mark Davis, who is a former Overstone member, faired marginally better in game two but still lost to Anthony White when his opponent chipped in for a winning net two on the 17th hole.

Wellingborough’s Ryan Evans recorded a convincing victory over Taylor Sargeant, before Mike Gilbrook levelled the match score by defeating Ryan McAllister 3&1.

Although Stewart Robertson took his game the distance, he was unable to complete the Wellingborough comeback as he missed a long putt on the 18th to go down to Andy Harrison.

Northants County made home advantage count after their tie with Collingtree Park was switched to their own track as they progressed for the loss of just half a point.

Brampton Heath were also convincing winners as they defeated Northampton 4-1, thanks to points from the quartet of Nick Herridge, Bob Frost, Jack Brown and Ben Jones.

Stoke Albany’s trip to Kibworth was called off due to the snow, even though a late request was made by the Leicestershire club to switch the tie to the away course.

Both clubs have asked for an extension, however the most likely outcome is that the tie will be decided by a coin toss at the tournament office.

The same applies for the ties between Cold Ashby and Daventry, Priors Hall versus Orton Meadows and Silverstone’s home clash with Kingsthorpe, which were all postponed due to the bad weather.
