Opeation fear for Diggin

Steve Diggin fears he may need an operation to cure the persistent groin problem that has blighted him for the last six weeks.

The Corby Town striker broke down again during the warm-up for last Saturday's Blue Square North game at Workington.

Since suffering the injury, in the FA Trophy tie at York at the end of January, Diggin has managed only 13 minutes as a substitute and missed

seven games.

"It's doing my head in," he admitted after the Workington game.

"I think I'm probably going to need to have an operation because a normal groin injury shouldn't be taking this long to heal.

"The frustrating thing is I'm feeling fine in training and in the week leading up to the game.

"But then every time I try to warm up properly before a match or kick a ball in anger, it goes again and I'm back to square one."

Diggin, who is Corby's second-top scorer this season with nine goals, will be a doubt for the Steelmen's home game with Hyde United this weekend.

And that's a problem for manager Graham Drury as Diggin's logical replacement in the squad, Ricky Miller, will also be missing as he starts a three-game ban.

The only pace option Drury has up front is top-scorer Leon Mettam – himself only just back from an ankle injury – as neither Jack Defty nor Jason Lee are quick players.

"I don't know whether Diggs hadn't prepared himself right and didn't tell us he'd got the injury or he just struck a ball funny in the warm-up and it went again," said Steelmen boss Drury.

"But he wasn't fit to go on at Workington and that was a major headache.

"It's frustrating because he's an ideal replacement for Mettam up top, either off the bench or starting, because he'll always get you goals."
