Mettam knows they have done it before

Leon Mettam is hoping for history to repeat itself as Corby Town look to haul themselves back into the Blue Square North play-off race.

The Steelmen were in danger of dropping off the pace after a mixed run of results.

But their weekend win over Vauxhall Motors, coupled with several of their rivals dropping points, means they are now back into the top 10 on the play-off trail again.

And, as they prepare for tonight's big game at one of their main rivals for a top-five slot, Mettam is hoping the success of their run to the Southern League title last season – when they won 11 of their last 13 games – will be something the team can draw upon.

"For a time last year it looked like we weren't going to do anything," he recalled.

"Then we put a great run together and ended up winning the championship.

"If we can repeat that sort of form again, then there's no reason why we can't still be in the play-offs.

"Knowing that we did what we did last year gives us all belief that we can do it again.

"A lot of the squad is different now.

"But what we have done is brought in better experience and better quality and that is only going to shine through to the end of the season."

While all squad members are important some are more important than others.

And Mettam falls into the latter category.

Steelmen fans were fearing the end of their play-off charge when the striker suffered a twisted ankle that boss Graham Drury feared would keep his top scorer out for weeks.

Instead, Mettam has made a remarkably swift recovery and proved he was back to his best with two goals against Vauxhall.

"It's nice to be back," he agreed. "When we first saw the injury it wasn't looking too great.

"But I've had the injury before and this time the bruising came out really quickly and so it healed up much faster.

"It was great to be back so soon and scoring."

Equally important for Corby fans was the sight of Jack Defty also scoring twice against Vauxhall.

And Mettam feels his partnership with Defty could be a key factor in the final weeks of the campaign.

"I like playing with big Jack because you know at the end of the day that he's going to hold the ball up and bring others into play for you," he said.

"Sometimes, if you're playing with some other players who are flicking the ball on here, there and everywhere you don't know where it's going to end up.

"But the key with Jack is that you know if you make the run he'll put the ball there for you.

"He doesn't just hold it up, he's clever with it too.
