Max enjoying his professional role

Double pre-season sessions and full-time training are a new experience for Rushden & Diamonds midfielder Max York.

He turned professional with this summer's switch from Histon where he was primarily part of the youth-team squad with six senior appearances in the second half of last term.

York – who started out at Cambridge United – was spotted by Paul Driver before the head of youth's promotion to become assistant-manager alongside Justin Edinburgh.

York said: "This is a completely new experience for me with my first

pre-season being full-time and having double sessions.

"It has been hard going but I'm getting used to it and I'm enjoying it.

"They are a great bunch of lads here and I'm just getting to know all of them.

"They did well last year by getting into the play-offs and hopefully we can go one better.

"I started talking to Paul and then Justin told me about the ambitions. I was impressed with the set-up and amazing facilities.

"I played against Diamonds' youth team in a cup game and I think Paul saw me a few times.

"I had a few offers but this was the best one. I can't wait to get started and hopefully score a few goals."

York opened his account for Diamonds after just seven minutes of last night's 5-1 win at Ilfracombe Town in the Joma South West Challenge Cup.

Nabil Shariff doubled the lead soon afterwards but Michael Corcoran

conceded a penalty which allowed the home side to pull one back before the break.

However Shariff struck again early in the second half then substitute Sam Smith got two goals in a three-minute spell.

Diamonds are back in action at Torrington tonight (8pm) knowing that victory over npower League Two club Shrewsbury Town would secure a place in Saturday's north Devon tournament semi-final.

Meanwhile the youth team won 3-2 at Hereward Teamsport United Counties League Division One neighbours Rushden & Higham United last night.

Diamonds will head to St Ives in the FA Youth Cup first qualifying round on Thursday, September 23.

James McPake scored the only goal after six minutes as Northampton Town lost at home to Coventry City.
