Justin lines up next targets

Justin Edinburgh is setting his main focus on another centre-half and at least one more striker to add to next season's Rushden & Diamonds squad.

Those transfer targets have become a priority at Nene Park following the double capture of defender Simon Downer and midfielder Max Porter this week plus previous deals to keep Kurt Robinson and Nicky McNamara.

Edinburgh hopes to complete season-long loans for two midfielders from a Coca-Cola Championship club while also awaiting answers from other possible signings ahead of the Blue Square Premier campaign.

The Diamonds manager said: "I'm working hard to get someone alongside Downer.

"We're looking pretty solid with our full-backs and central midfielders.

"We want wide players as well. But the priority at the moment is a centre-half and one or two strikers.

"Downer's performances spoke for themselves last season so I'm delighted to keep him here.

"He's a very cool customer and a laid-back guy. It's a massive signing

for us.

"I think Downer is probably the best centre-half in this league because he reads the game and makes it look easy.

"We haven't even seen the best of him yet and we need to get him out of second gear. There's so much to offer.

"In terms of age and experience, we're looking at Downer to lead the way for us.

"But a young player like Porter has experience with more than 50 Football League games so that's really an ideal situation.

"He knows how to conduct himself when it gets physical and frantic. He can cope with all of that."

Meanwhile Diamonds have decided to take up the option to keep striker Michael Rankine.

Left-back Gareth Jelleyman has been released following a loan spell

at Barrow who want to make it a permanent move.

Former Diamonds striker Chris Beardsley has joined Stevenage Borough after being released by Kettering Town.
