Harper ready for a decision

The trio of Kettering Town trialists are likely to learn their fate tomorrow.

Former Northampton Town midfielder Alex Dyer has featured in all three first-team pre-season friendlies so far while youngsters Sam Byles and Harry Baker both turned in good performances in Tuesday's 4-1 home defeat to Milton Keynes Dons.

Poppies boss Lee Harper confirmed his squad is now "more or less done" following the arrival of player-coach Paul Furlong.

But there may still be a chance of at least two or all three being offered deals for the Blue Square Bet Premier campaign.

Harper said: "Nothing has been decided but we are keen to sort it out before the end of the week.

"We need to discuss it with the chairman and a lot will depend on their wage demands as well.

"I think our squad is more or less done but there may be a chance of adding one or two of these youngsters to it.

"I thought Harry and Sam did well for us.

"Sam has been at Arsenal since he was very young and he has impressed me both in training and in the matches I have seen him.

"You can see he is technically gifted and I thought he was good in his preferred position at right-back."

Harper, meanwhile, believes everyone should judge his squad on their final two first-team friendlies – the first of which is at Corby Town on Saturday.

And he is keen to see his side improve defensively having shipped eight goals in the two matches against Charlton Athletic and MK Dons.

"We need to defend better as a unit and I have been disappointed with the goals we have conceded," Harper said.

"We have played two very good League One sides in our last two.

"But people will have every right to judge us on how we perform in the games against Corby and Hinckley."
