Gledhill the hero in comeback victory

UWIC Archers 109 Wellingborough Phoenix 111

Mark Gledhill scored in the final seconds to seal a remarkable comeback win for Wellingborough in this EBL National Division Three game.

Phoenix had trailed by 20 points at one stage but persistently chipped away at the deficit, timing their run to perfection to secure a seventh win of the campaign.

Wellingborough started like the game like they were still on the bus as they slumped to a 27-7 deficit after only six minutes.

They finally showed some signs of life towards the end of the first quarter with a 12-4 run to trail 31-19 going into the second period.

Phoenix continued to reduce the Archers lead at the start of the second quarter as eight points from Danny Barrett and five from Gledhill brought them within four of their hosts.

But a late surge from the home side left Phoenix still 58-49 behind at half-time.

The second half opened with both sides trading baskets until Devon Adams took control with 13 points in the quarter.

A 13-2 run put Wellingborough ahead for the first time and when Chris Fletcher ended the period with back-to-back three-pointers, Phoenix held a 79-76 advantage going into the fourth quarter.

And they looked to have done enough to seal the win when a strong start to the final period put them over 10 points clear with six minutes left.

But two technical fouls handed the initiative back to the home side as they constructed a 18-4 run to regain the lead at 99-96.

Phoenix though, were not to be denied. Gary Burton's three-pointer stopped the rot and tied the score before five more from Barrett and Gledhill's last-second heroics sealed the win.

Adams top scored for Wellingborough with 21 points while Gledhill added 20 and Barrett 19.

"We responded extremely well to going behind and finally seemed to show that we can prevail in tight situations at the end of close games," commented coach Danny Alexis afterwards.
