Furlong is in for Poppies
Paul Furlong intends to take his opportunity as a player-coach at Kettering Town with "both hands".
The experienced striker, who is still going strong at the age of 41, made his debut for the Poppies in last night's 4-1 friendly defeat to Milton Keynes Dons at the Elgood's Arena.
And the frontman, who once cost Chelsea 2.3m and played over 40 games for Barnet in League Two last season, can't wait to get to work both on the pitch and on the training ground.
"I got a call from (Poppies boss) Lee Harper and I have worked with him before at QPR," Furlong said.
"He sold the club to me after a good chat and I decided it was the right move for me.
"I have made it no secret that I want to coach and stay in the game after my playing career is over.
"This is an opportunity for me and I intend to take it with both hands.
"That's the first bit of football I have played since last season so it was nice to get back in the swing of things.
"We still have a few weeks for me to get some match fitness up and I will be firing for the start of the season.
"I know we had a few boys on trial but my first impressions were very good.
"We tried to play football in the right way and we did very well in the first half.
"They are a bit ahead of us and we have some catching up to do but I am sure that will come."
Furlong was one of three new faces in the Poppies side last night as ex-Arsenal right-back Sam Byles and former Leyton Orient winger Harry Baker both played as part of their trials with the club.
Angelo Balanta put MK Dons in front but James Dance replied with a magnificent curling shot soon after.
Sam Baldock regained the lead for the visitors after half-time and further goals from Stephen Gleeson and Jermaine Easter rounded it off.
