Westwood will be ready if more players move on
Ashley Westwood insists he will be ready to act if any Kettering Town players leave the club before the transfer window slams shut tonight.
A transfer embargo imposed by the Football Conference means the Poppies will not be able to bring any new faces in before 11pm this evening.
But caretaker-boss Westwood, who has led a threadbare squad to two successive home wins to move them out of the bottom four in the Blue Square Bet Premier, says he will be prepared for all eventualities.
The Poppies remain in financial crisis with a fans’ forum organised by former director Lee Thorn, who made his own offer for the club in December, scheduled to take place at Nene Park on Friday night when it is hoped the future will become a bit clearer.
That comes just days before a court hearing in London following a winding- up order being issued on the club by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs while the squad are yet to be paid last month’s wages.
Striker Jean-Paul Marna cancelled his contract at the end of last week and the fear is that more could follow.
Westwood said: “The lads have shown they are capable of playing in the league, if not higher.
“Whether people have been watching that is not for me to say. We will just deal with each situation as it happens.
“I will be making some phone calls to a few contacts in the game just to see what players might be available if we lose a couple of our own ones.
“I am working hard off the field just to make sure everything is in place for next weekend.”
The next task on the pitch is a trip to play-off chasing Southport on Saturday and Westwood is looking to continue the good work that is doing him and his players no harm at all.
“I am hopefully giving a good account of myself and we have had two great victories against two decent teams,” he added.
“I don’t know what the future holds and I am here if needs be. But it will be up to whoever is in charge of the club.
“I am taking it a day at a time.
“The lads put in a tremendous shift on Saturday and we will go to Southport looking to build on what we have achieved.”
The Poppies Supporters Coach will leave the car park in Rockingham Road at 9am.
