Fitness concerns for Diamonds midfield

The fitness of two midfielders must be assessed again to find out whether Rushden & Diamonds will have a full-strength squad for the Bank Holiday weekend.

Rob Wolleaston missed the 4-2 home win over Forest Green Rovers on

Saturday when substitute Nicky McNamara was carried off in stoppage-time.

Both players are receiving further treatment for knee injuries with

concerns that they may not be ready to return for Saturday's trip to

Stevenage Borough and the Nene Park derby with Cambridge United on

Monday.

But Diamonds remain more hopeful that left-back Kurt Robinson and striker Sam Smith will be back soon.

Assistant-manager Michael Stone said: "We've got a few knocks at the moment.

"However, the break without a midweek match has come at a good time so that we can regroup and get everyone ready.

"Smith and Robinson did a little bit of training yesterday. But we're still waiting on McNamara and Wolleaston.

"I think McNamara will probably need a scan later this week to see if there is a problem or whether we can rule that out.

"He got a real fright when his knee locked up. Fingers crossed it's not as serious as it looked at the time.

"With two games coming up, we'd like a full squad but those two are the biggest doubts.

"We were pleased to get a couple back and it was rather surprising to see them get through Saturday's match.

"Aaron O'Connor was ill last week but he got himself out of his sick bed and came on to get off the mark.

"Craig Farrell also had a fitness test before the game and we weren't really expecting him to come through that.

"But there was a change overnight and he was very positive when he came to the ground.

"Having scored towards the end of last Tuesday's match, Farrell had the momentum and he wanted to stay in the team and score again.

"There's a competitive element among the strikers now they are all off the mark.

"They don't want to miss much football because they know it might mean dropping down the pecking order as well."
