Edinburgh setting his sights on a solid start

Justin Edinburgh will refuse to get carried away by Rushden & Diamonds' form at the start of the season.

They kick off the Blue Square Premier campaign against Salisbury City at Nene Park on Saturday, followed by trips to York City and Eastbourne

Borough then home games with Hayes & Yeading United and Forest Green Rovers.

The fixture list looks like a chance for Diamonds to claim an early spot towards the top of the table.

Edinburgh said: "Hopefully we can get a solid start so we're not chasing our first points after two or three games when people can become anxious.

"We have to be careful to practice what we preach because you can be successful even if you don't win the first couple.

"The sooner you get that first win, though, the players settle down and you can go on a little run.

"Confidence is a big percentage of football and that goes hand in hand with results.

"There are no easy games. But we feel that we can be competitive.

"Picking up points from a good start will help us.

"However, if we don't start particularly well, it doesn't mean we can't be successful.

"In the past three years Exeter City have done well – even though they are always slow starters.

"They have been around the top 10 in October or November and didn't become despondent because they were outside the play-offs.

"It's all about winning games in the right periods of the season.
