Edinburgh's so disappointed

Justin Edinburgh set his sights on a play-off place after being left "bitterly disappointed" by Rushden & Diamonds' exit in the FA Cup.

They came from behind twice until Coca-Cola League One strugglers Brighton & Hove Albion snatched a late winner at the Withdean Stadium on Saturday to book a third-round tie against Stockport County or Torquay United.

Lee Tomlin and Aaron O'Connor produced first-half equalisers but Liam Dickinson's second goal sent the Seagulls through just five minutes before full-time as Diamonds looked set for a replay.

Edinburgh said: "We possibly deserved more and we gave a good account of ourselves.

"Having come from behind on two occasions, it's disappointing not to take them back to our place.

"They have got good players and the two front boys (Dickinson and Nicky Forster) were the difference for them to win the game.

"The way in which we conceded all three goals was unlike us.

"We've been on a good run which is down to a team ethic and defending well.

"So looking back, it's bitterly disappointing.

"We were five minutes away from getting a replay with extra revenue for the football club and maybe progressing into the third round with the big boys coming in.

"We've had a good run and we will get back to the bread and butter when the priority is collecting three points against York City.

"I'm gutted for the players. They showed spirit in getting back into the game.

"We bossed the first 20 minutes of the second half and I thought we might have gone on to win it.

"At the end, though, we were going deeper and the pressure got to us. Until then we kept our shape well.

"All three goals came from mistakes. But we've got to draw a line under that now.

"Hopefully we can keep ourselves in contention in the league going into the new year.

"We've got to take a lot out of the cup game – although at times I felt we didn't have enough belief to win it.

"We must take heart from this and continue our league form to push on.

"I'm always striving for extra and I'm proud of the players."
