Did grieving Gorman come back too soon?
AN EMOTIONAL John Gorman has admitted that he may have returned to football too early following the tragic death of his wife Myra in the spring – and that he faces an uncertain future following his shock resignation as Cobblers boss.
The former Swindon and Wycombe Wanderers boss yesterday quit the Sixfields hot seat after just 27 games in charge, stating that he had got to the stage where 'he couldn't be bothered' with the emotional down of losing matches.
The 57-year-old only took the job in the summer after being harshly sacked by Wycombe, and asked if, in hindsight, it was all too for him much following the death of his wife, Gorman said: "It is possible.
"I am just so disappointed. The chairman has been brilliant and that is the reason I feel really bad because I did not want to let him down.
"But with everything that has happened with my wife, I just don't feel right."
Gorman intimated that the importance of football has been put into perspective, saying: "I was out of work after what happened at Wycombe, and within three days I had two job interviews and handed the opportunity to come to Northampton straight away.
"That meant I got stuck into it, but I have to be honest. If you win then life is great, but if you don't it is rubbish and I just couldn't be bothered with that any more. I found myself asking 'what is the point?'
"I tried my best. I want to be successful, but I don't want to let the supporters or anybody down."
And on the timing of his decision, a clearly low Gorman said: "It is better that a new man can come in and keep the club up, rather than me be the one to take them down.
"I think I have left the club with plenty of time now, I mean we are not bottom of the league and five points adrift or anything like that.
"I still think there are very good players at the club, but money is tight and I couldn't see things changing too much. But I think if a couple of players can be brought in it could make a big difference.
"I think we have played some beautiful football, but it is all about putting the ball in the net. That is what football is about, but it just hasn't happened, and I don't think I've had any luck.
"Away from home it has happened, but at home I have really struggled.
"There are games where we should have been 2-0 or 3-0 up, and then the other team gets a goal out of nothing and we have been chasing games.
"Maybe somebody else will come in and change that luck."
Gorman says that he has no idea what he will doing next, but admitted that his time as a manager could be up, and that he may now be looking for a less stressful role.
"I have no plans at all," said Gorman. "It is coming up to Christmas and I have left myself without a job.
"Maybe the pressure of being a manager is too much for me at the minute, and I might have to have a rethink.
"Maybe I could go back to being a number two. But I love the game, and it is all I have ever done.
"I have got nothing else to fall back on."
