Diamonds make a winning start

Rushden & Diamonds eased to victory in tonight's opening pre-season friendly at Rothwell Town.

The Bones began brightly but the Blue Square Premier professionals went ahead on 19 minutes when Rob Wolleaston laid the ball back for Neil Cousins to fire home.

Lee Tomlin blasted over the bar from the penalty spot but made amends soon afterwards with a 20-yard curler into the top corner.

Just before the break Max Porter made it 3-0 from another long-range drive.

Diamonds fielded a different line-up for the second half and Rothwell reduced the deficit when Simon Underwood headed in David Glass' free-kick.
