Dempster: We will continue to chip in

John Dempster insists the Kettering Town defenders will continue to do their bit in the attacking third during the Blue Square Premier run-in.

A week that saw manager Lee Harper bring in two new strikers ended with centre-half Ian Roper and left-back James Jennings scoring the goals that sealed a 2-0 win over strugglers Grays Athletic at the weekend.

Dempster was also in the thick of things as he claimed two assists with Roper scoring after his header had come back off the crossbar while his pinpoint cross was finished off by Jennings.

And, as they prepare for another home clash against Cambridge United tonight, Dempster believes there will be more to come from the

defenders in the final third.

He joked: "I didn't see Ian Roper's goal because I was flat on my face but he has assured me it was a fantastic finish!

"I have had a few assists this season and it's a shame I haven't followed it up with a few more goals.

"But there are plenty of games to come and I am confident I will chip in with one or two before the season is over.

"It was good to see JJ getting a goal as well and we know we need to do our bit in helping the goals go in as well as making sure the opposition aren't getting past us."

The win over Grays gave Kettering a good start to what could prove to be a pivotal month in the scramble for the play-off places, even though the Poppies could still be thwarted in their hopes for an extended season due to their stadium problems.

The current lack of a 10-year lease on Rockingham Road means they won't be eligible for promotion to the Football League, although Harper is staying hopeful that it will change.

And Dempster insists the attitude of the players will stay the same and he is well aware they face a much sterner test against Martin Ling's side tonight.

"March is a massive month for all the teams at the top of the table and we have had a good start to it," Dempster added.

"The games are coming thick and fast now so we will also have to rest up and then prepare properly.

"We were comfortable winners on Saturday but Cambridge will a different challenge and they have some good players.

"But we are ready and it would be fantastic to get another three points to edge us a bit further up the table.

"Our form is looking quite good at the minute and we are playing some good stuff.

"But we know there are no easy games and Cambridge are going to give us a real test."

The Poppies Supporters Coach will be going to Oxford United on Saturday. It will be leaving the club car park at 12.30pm. To book a seat contact Martin on 01536 520047.
