Corcoran going right back to learn his role
Michael Corcoran is learning to enjoy his role in the Rushden & Diamonds defence.
The Irishman has been known as a utility player who can deputise across the back four or in central midfield where he kicked off his professional career.
But the pre-season schedule is giving him a chance to become the first-choice right-back following Curtis Osano's switch to the middle alongside skipper Jamie Stuart.
Corcoran admitted: "I would prefer to have one position – although if needed I can still be called upon for another role.
"I started out in midfield and I'd like to play there in the long term.
"But I'm enjoying it at right-back and starting to learn a lot more about getting forward.
"I know about the defensive side and now I need to get used to making the right runs.
"If Lee Tomlin or Ryan Charles are playing down the right then I don't really need to worry about over-lapping because they are very positive in one-on-one situations."
Last night Diamonds drew 0-0 at home to Southend United.
That followed a trip to north Devon for the Joma South West Challenge Cup where Corcoran came through two full games in 24 hours on his return from an injury which had ruled him out since the win
at Kettering Town four months ago.
Corcoran added: "It was a good week to have all the new lads together as a team bonding session.
"Everyone has settled in and we think we've got another good bunch here.
"We had a small squad last season but we were a tight unit who worked hard for each other.
"Since taking over the gaffer (Justin Edinburgh) has tried to build the team spirit and I'm sure that will be the same this year.
"I'd like to think we can challenge for the play-offs again.
"Last season nobody was talking about us as contenders and we went about our job.
"This time there are a lot of good teams who are expected to be up there.
"We will just concentrate on ourselves."
