Corby pay the penalty with promotion on ice

The champagne will have to stay in the ice box for another week as Corby slipped to a 1-0 reverse at lowly Derwent.

The hosts belied their position near the foot of the table and their work-rate alone meant they shaded the first half in terms of chances but it ended scoreless.

Corby looked much more dominant in the second half as they put Derwent under great pressure.

They looked to have forced the breakthrough when Darren Brookes' shot was illegally stopped. Up stepped skipper Mark Hawkins but his penalty was saved.

With less than 10 minutes to go a short corner was poorly executed by the hosts but in their confusion they managed to divert the ball into the goal.

The result leaves Derwent safe but with all Corby's rivals losing they can seal promotion with wins this Saturday at home to Berkswell and away on Sunday to Leicester University.

Corby 2nd beat Grantham 3-1 after taking the lead through captain Andy Hart who found the bottom corner off the post with the keeper making a bad mistake.

The second goal came soon after with Aiden Elliot making a fine run along the right wing to find James Dunn open. He fed Simon Davey who

hit it first time under the advancing keeper.

Five minutes later Grantham pulled one back on a rare attack, hitting Corby's three-man defence on the break.

After the break Corby settled into a more passing style of play, changing the formation to a more familiar 4-4-2.

They continued to pressure the opposition, winning a number of short corners but unfortunately unable to convert their chances.

Davey scored again deep into the second half to bury the game as some good passing from Hart and Owen Dunn found him open in the D for simple shot through the keeper's legs.
