Cobblers: Sammo looking for two strikers

Ian Sampson has confirmed he is now in the market to sign two new strikers following Tadhg Purcell's season-ending injury.

The Irish striker will not play again this term after rupturing a cruciate ligament and damaging a lateral ligament in his right knee in last weekend's draw with Wycombe Wanderers.

Sampson was hoping to bolster his forward line with a new addition before losing Purcell, and will now intensify that search.

As well as looking at his options in the loan market, the Northampton boss will also look at what players are available on free transfers, and has stated he may get one in to train with the squad next week and play in a behind-closed-doors reserve-team friendly against Coventry City.

"Tadhg getting injured means I'd like to get two strikers in now instead of the one we were looking for," he said.

"There's a bit of money to spend, it's just going to be about getting the right players in for the right wages.

"We'll be trying quite hard over the next week, we can get loan players in from Wednesday but there are unattached players that can come in and do a job too.

"I've got players in mind but I couldn't move for them before because I didn't have the money to spend.

"Now we can probably get a couple of players in, we've got a game next week against Coventry and hopefully we can get someone in for that and have a look at them then.

"We haven't got any money to spend on transfer fees but there's a bit to play with in terms of wages so we'll see what we can do."
