Northampton Saints' first season back in the Guinness Premiership ended in defeat at Sale Sharks.
The result leaves them in eighth place in the table – a creditable finish after promotion from League One last term.
Neil Best and Sean Lamont scored Saints' tries in the 24-18 reverse.
They now need to win the European Challenge Cup to secure a place in next year's Heineken Cup.
