Leon Knight just wants to be happy – by scoring goals and playing regularly for Rushden & Diamonds.
The former Chelsea trainee yesterday completed the formalities of his free transfer to Nene Park by passing a medical and signing a two-year contract.

He was released by Wycombe Wanderers – just eight months after signing from Milton Keynes Dons – and made his Diamonds debut against Histon earlier this week in their first defeat of the Blue Square Premier campaign.

Now Knight is looking to "get back into the groove" by settling down with Garry Hill's new-look squad.

The 25-year-old said: "I'm pleased to be back in training every day.

"It doesn't matter to me about dropping out of the Football League. I need to play games and get on with it.

"I've come here to score goals and I know that's the bottom line of why the manager brought me in.

"I've always said that if I'm not scoring goals then what am I doing?

"I need to contribute and I feel I'm a natural finisher.

"Sometimes things work out straight away.

"But I'm going to work hard and, hopefully, everything will come together fairly quickly.

"I've been at other clubs where things just didn't happen for me.

"That's football. Managers leave or come in and have different plans.

"I'm happy to be here. The club is striving to win things and I want to be part of that.

"We've got a strong squad of players with Football League experience. We need to get back up there."

Knight – who was a prolific scorer at Huddersfield Town (loan), Brighton & Hove Albion and Swansea City – is set to partner Lee Phillips for tomorrow's trip to Kidderminster Harriers.

Diamonds boss Hill was delighted to conclude the deal which boosts their striking options for a promotion challenge.

He added: "When you look at our forwards we've certainly got goals up there.

"Having a signing like Leon shows our intention. We can't afford to get left behind by other clubs."
