Michael Corcoran struck two late goals to send Rushden & Diamonds into the FA Cup first round proper.
Aaron O'Connor put Diamonds ahead on 19 minutes by sweeping home Craig Farrell's shot from Lee Tomlin's corner.
They should have doubled that advantage as O'Connor raced clear and Farrell found Paul Terry who was denied by keeper Tony Caig before firing the rebound wide.
Workington were unable to create any clear-cut chances before the break but they should have levelled around the hour mark as Gareth Arnison missed the target.
Diamonds wasted an even better chance three minutes later when Tomlin blasted high and wide from the penalty spot after Kyle May handled Simon Downer's header.
Victory was finally sealed with eight minutes left as stand-in skipper Corcoran stabbed in Farrell's free-kick.
Corcoran converted a stoppage-time spot-kick after a foul on Kurt Robinson.
