'Outstanding' was how David Capel described Northamptonshire's fighting spirit after their win over Warwickshire.
After some tidy work in the field had restricted the Bears to an under-par 232 in their Friends Provident Trophy clash, the Steelbacks themselves suffered a wobble with the bat losing three wickets in one over.

But the reliable Stephen Peters rose to the occasion and his battling unbeaten 97 – his third score of 90 or more in the last four games – helped his side to victory and delighted his coach.

"That was really an out-standing effort," Capel said. "Particularly Stephen Peters who had to stand at one end and watch three quick
wickets fall and then show the resilience and fight he has to bounce back was incredibly pleasing.

"Rob White also got stuck in well in a hairy little period. But the other outstanding feature, alongside Stephen's effort, was Riki Wessels.

"Not just getting the runs but the style and manner he did it in was very impressive. He showed the ability he has got and we have to remember he is still only 22. That was a very mature innings.

"The lads were very disappointed to lose to Leicestershire on Saturday and to see the way we responded was very pleasing from my point of view."

Capel now hopes his men can take some confidence found at Edgbaston into the LV County Championship game against Leicestershire at Grace Road tomorrow.

"Ideally it would have been better to have started on Wednesday and just get a little bit more of a break," the coach added.

"But we've got a little bit of momentum now. Now we've got a win it would nice to see us get our Championship season rolling and put in a good performance there."
