"I'll definitely be looking to bring someone in on loan before we play at Hereford on Saturday," said Gray who has been linked with a move for Gabor Gyepes.
The Hungarian was sold to Cardiff City in August but has struggled to cement a place in the Bluebirds' first team.
"What we can't do, though, is go out and get someone in from the Premier League because even the reserves and the younger players at that level are earning fortunes.
"I've got a wage structure at this club and it's very important we stay within that.
"One or two of the players we've got out there at the moment are lacking a little bit of form but we've got nobody who can come in and replace them because of the injuries."
Meanwhile, the home game against Colchester United, which was postponed last month due to the weather, will now take place at Sixfields a week on Saturday on the day allocated to FA Cup second- round ties.
On-loan goalkeeper Frank Fielding featured for England's under-21s last night – just 24 hours after conceding five goals at Sixfields.
