Jason Brown has been handed the honour of leading Northampton- shire in their three-day clash with Cardiff UCCE.
The match, which got underway at the County Ground today, sees the experienced performer in charge of a team made up of a combination of Second XI players and first-teamers in need of some cricket.

It is a test that Brown is looking forward to – although he admits he does not exactly possess an abundance of leadership experience.

"It's the first time in a very long time that I've been captain," he said.

"I think the last chance I had would have been in the under-19s for my club side – and we won't say how long ago that was!

"I am looking forward to it. It will be a good challenge with a good set of lads and, hopefully, we can play some decent cricket.

"I'm one of the senior players around the club these days and I haven't bowled that much so far this season.

"I think those two factors together were probably the reason I've been chosen to play and captain the side.

"It will be different for me because usually I only have to worry about myself.

"It should take my mind off my bowling a little bit. I'm sure I'll enjoy it."

Brown, who is currently enjoying his benefit summer with the club, could also have half an eye on a landmark haul.

The spinner – in his 14th season on the staff at Wantage Road – has taken 394 first-class wickets for Northamptonshire.

So, with just six needed to break the 400 barrier, will he be giving himself an extra long bowl against the students in order to reach his target?

"No, not at all," he added. "I would obviously be delighted to break 400 wickets for the club.

"But it's not something I'm working towards. I will just try to bowl my best and take each game as it comes.

"If I get there, I get there. It would be nice. But it's not something that is a concern."
