County time trial riders took full advantage of the weather to register a string of improvements over a weekend of warm sunshine and light winds.
A two-week working trip to Afghanistan proved an unexpected tonic for 45 Road Club's Simon Fitzhugh who, struggling for form all season after a winter virus, clocked 55.11 in Central District LCA's 25-mile event to remove 58 seconds from his best set in May last year on the same Etwall to Uttoxeter course.
"I'd been pretty despondent and the enforced break seemed to be the last thing I needed," said a delighted Fitzhugh.
"But it turned out to be just what I needed. I weather-watched all week so I knew it could be a good day, and it turned out to be excellent."
A Welland Valley CC trio all posted new bests in the same event – Phil Rayner lowering his 15-year mark by 45 seconds to 52.26, within touching distance of the club record, while Matt Plews (56.20) improved by 59 seconds and Linda Hubbard – who, with Rayner, had a problem on the way to the event and ended up riding the last 10 miles to the start as a warm-up – reduced her best by four minutes with 1.00.19.
Oundle Velo veteran Jim Jones returned from illness to record a season's best 56.38, finishing fourth on age-related standard times with plus 27.06, as Matt Bottrill (Team I-Ride) won the event in a superb 48.05.
It was a similar story further down the country where Gavin Hinxman (WVCC) and Cath Weiss (M&D Cycles-Specialized) both shattered their previous 50-mile bests in Corinium & Bristol South CC's event near Swindon.
So hot that he threw his areohelmet into a hedge after 15 milers, Hinxman finished in 1.51.34 for a four-minute improvement – adding to his new 100-mile best set two weeks earlier – while Weiss also continued an outstanding run of form by beating two hours for the first time as she recorded 1.57.36.
"We had none of the thundery storms that were threatened and I was determined to get under two hours," said Weiss.
"It was a bit do or die for the last 10 miles but I just gave it everything."
James Wall (Stratford CC) posted a winning 1.42.57.
Storms hit Hertfordshire Wheelers' 10-mile event at Great Amwell, near Ware, where Stuart Wright (M&D Cycles) narrowly missed out on a first 30mph ride with 20.05 for fifth place, his fastest for some years, while Dave Gill (A5 Rangers CC) clocked a personal best 21.44. Nino Piccoli (API-Metrow) was the winner in 18.46.
